Ivan Petrovich Pavlov.
When he lived: 1849-1936
Field of expertise: Russian scientist.
Most famous research project: His experiment to find out what triggered the secretion of saliva using dogs. He found out that the fact that dogs drool even when there is no food is due to the fact that whoever fed the dog was wearing a lab coat. Therefore, when someone wearing a lab coat came in the dog expected there to be food, thus, reacting the same way as he would to food. To further support his point, Pavlov did another experiment where he would ring a certain bell whenever the dog was being fed. Eventually, whenever the dog heard the sound of the bell, the dog would drool. This is known as the "conditioned response."

Connection to Brave New World: Pavlov discovered the conditioned response. He learned that when dogs hear or see a certain thing, for example a lab coat or a bell, then they expect food. This is used in Brave New World to condition the people, not dogs, to expect what the controllers want them to expect and want. Conditioning is a huge part of Brave New World because conditioning people is how the controllers control the general population. The controllers condition the public so often when they are little that the controllers can make the people believe whatever the controllers want them to believe.

Das Kapital: A formal piece of writing written on political economy by Karl Marx in German. It is a critical breakdown of capitalism and its economic purpose. Published in 1867.

Karl Marx's political ideas were:
  • He wanted to extend factories and instruments of production owned by the state.
  • He also wanted free education for all children in public schools.
  • He wanted to combine agriculture with manufacturing industries.
  • A heavy income tax.
  • Most importantly he wanted to increase the power of the state.
His preferred governmental system was: Communism: A theory or system of social organization based on the holding of all property in common, actual ownership being ascribed to the community as a whole or to the state.
--- Karl Marx thought Communism would be effective because it would make everyone equal. Equalitly causes no problems or issues between people. Everyone would be paid and treated the same. This causes no unhappiness, greed, or jealousy.

CONNECTION:Das Kapital is a really good example of how Brave New World runs its government. Das Kapital promotes communistic beliefs. The ideology in Das Kapital goes along with the notion that "everyone belongs to everyone else" in the sense that everyone in Brave New World works for the good of the community and not for themselves. These beleifs are good to form a stable society. The problem with that is their is no room for people to be individuals and contribute to the society with their ideas which help the society to grow.

CONNECTION:Karl Marx just like Bernard Marx was a very intellegent man and had a lot of his own ideas. They both saw problems with the way their societies were run and wanted to fix them. Karl Marx wanted everyone to be considered equal in the society. Bernard Marx wants to overthrow the Brave New World society because he thinks there is more to live for in the savages society. Karl Marx tried to overthrow his capitalist society, while Bernard Marx tries to overthrow the Brave New World society.

Connection to Brave New World: Henry Ford is remembered as a hero in the Brave New World. The assembly line made it possible to mass produce a product. This makes more products. The assembly line would employ people who weren’t smart or skilled enough to build a whole product by themselves. In Brave New World they sometimes say, “Oh Ford” (Huxley 28) in frustration just like in the present day we sometimes mutter, “Oh God” in frustration. In Brave New World, Ford is the closest thing to a god that they have. In Brave New World the clock Big Ben in London is renamed Big Henry in honor of Henry Ford. The sign of the T replaces the cross as the major religious symbol of the Brave New Worlds time period.
